I'm a rather big fanboy of AKG since the local authorized dealer in my neck of the woods did a bang up job with the RMA of my old K812. To me, both are amazingly detailed sounding, both have awesome treble energy (not at all sibilant to me) with and edge to the K812 in the bass department. I've ordered a 4 pin xlr balance cable for my HD800 and I'm curious to see if this makes a difference (whether the already wide soundstage opens up even more). For orchestral pieces, the HD800 is the shizznizzle, but for more intimate pieces like jazz, the K812 shines. What I can discern is this: The HD800 has a wider soundstage, the K812 not so.but this isn't equivalent of my saying it's narrow, far from it! The K812 has a great soundstage, just not as wide as the HD800. I'm the last person to ask about this as I'm terribad at remembering and describing sound. I want another one for my office, but that probably won't happen until later this year. The HA-1 is awesome, I think that's why everyone has one! It runs as a pre-amp, headphone amp, and is just the centerpiece of my living room setup, even acting as a HT bypass for my 5.1 AVR. Unfortunately the LEMO connectors are roughly $40 to purchase, which is where most of the cost with the K812 mod comes in. The cables were about another $250 total for a 6-foot and 4-foot cable. All told, I only spent $100 on the balanced mod. Modifying the ribbon cable took less than a day to finish up. My socket didn't want to come out at all, so he ended up having to get a drill and specialized drill bit to complete that part of things. Getting it out with my pair proved much more difficult than the first pair he balanced. Unfortunately due to the hand made nature of the K812, there's quite a bit of variation on how much glue ends up holding that socket in place. soldering points, cable y-splits, sleeving, headphone cup modification, etc).He actually told me the ribbon cable was the easy part.
